Marko Car Street, Herceg Novi
Old Town cobblestones between Belavista and Mića Pavlovića Square
Ulica Marka Cara is a short, photogenic cobblestone street in the heart of Herceg Novi’s Old Town. It links the upper town square—Belavista (Herceg Stjepan Square)—with the lower Mića Pavlovića Square, is about 150 meters long, and runs over the gentle stairways typical of the Old Town. An official municipal decision describes it precisely: “from Herceg Stjepan Square (east side) to Mića Pavlovića Square (Basic Court building), L=150 m.”
Where it is & how to get there
The easiest landmarks are Belavista (by the Church of St. Archangel) and the lower square with the Church of St. Jerome. If you start from Belavista, Marko Car Street takes you straight down to Mića Pavlovića Square; in the opposite direction, from the lower square uphill you come out at Belavista. The street is pedestrian-only, stone-paved, about 3 m wide—essentially a “city staircase,” as many Old Town streets are known in Novi.
What to see along the way (and right next to it)
At the very end of the street is Mića Pavlovića Square with the Catholic Church of St. Jerome (1856–1857), built on the site of an earlier 17th-century church; works by Tripo Kokolja are kept here. A few steps away is the small Church of St. Leopold Mandić (formerly dedicated to St. Francis, from 1688). You’ll also find the Herceg Novi Music School here, so the square often hums with rehearsals and concerts. Everything lies within a few dozen meters—ideal for a short stroll and photos.
Who was Marko Car (after whom the street is named)?
Marko Car (1859–1953) was a literary critic, essayist, and travel writer from Herceg Novi/Topla, a polyglot and prominent cultural figure; from 1937 to 1941 he served as president of the Serbian Literary Cooperative. He lived and worked in Zadar and Belgrade.
